I was born and raised in Montana but now live in a suburb of Philadelphia with my wife and our two children. In addition to being a writer and artist, I am a publisher and an organizational consultant in private practice. (See McKnight • Kaney) In that capacity, I work with senior executives on business strategy and its execution. I hold a Ph.D. in psychology in addition to a bachelor's degree in art.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Serious photography is generally not pretty. Often, it offends and cajoles, it accosts and wants to jolt us from complacency. How can anything serious, therefore, be lovely and peaceful?

I have been a photographer and artist for over 40 years. Graduating with an art degree in 1969, I desperately wanted to be taken seriously. Those were the days of abstract expressionism (which I love, still), and I learned that much of the idea behind “serious” art—at least to some—was to cajole and shock. Try as I might, I could not use my art to gall a viewer.

On a related point, in my work as an organizational psychologist, I have attempted for over 30 years to create resonance, harmony, and peace. How could my art, taken at least by me quite seriously, attempt anything else?

Do my images speak to something serene and harmonious within? I hope so. But are these images merely pretty? I truly hope not.

From a technical standpoint, the process of creation is, for many of these pieces, a lot like painting in that I usually start with an image that intrigues me and then embellish it with other images or parts of images. Typically, when producing my art, I do not have an end in mind, but strive for a result that is both beautiful and edgy; just like I see life itself. Some images come together rapidly while others take days or weeks to complete.
